Phnom
Da
Phnom Da is situated in Prek Ta Phor, Kork Thalork
commune, Angkor Borei district. Phnom Da is submerged under water for almost
half of the year due to heavy rainfall in this area.
What can you find there?
Ø The Cambodian Government has taken the initiative to beautify
and get this place to prominence and make this the hub for studies about the
history of Cambodia.
Ø The temple atop the Phnom Da hill was built by
Rutravarman in the 6th century. This 12 square metre temple is made
out of laterite, bricks and sandstone.
Ø The most important mode of commute to Phnom
Da, the Canal 15 was constructed in the 18th century thus shortening
the route between Takeo and Angkor Bonei.
Ø A stone in the temple depicts the churning of the ocean,
which is now broken into two pieces.
Ø There are also illustrations of the sleeping Vishnu in the
process of creating the world.
Ø Very close to the 100 metre high hill are five artificial
caves of historical relevance.
Ø Most of the Phnom Da architecture is of Khmer style of
sculpture. The sculptures still look lively and are adorned in jewellery
inspired from nature.
Ø Many of the Phnom Da sculptures are of Buddhist in nature.
